Ashwagandha- A Herbal Remedy for Stress

There are number of herbs that could help in alleviating various health symptoms. They are unsung ingredients of so many recipes and one of them in particular is known for its stress- busting properties.

Ashwagandha is an ancient herb which is used for its medicinal properties and is an adaptogen. Adaptogens, adapt to the needs of the body to decrease inflammation, restore inner harmony and promote optimal health.

Ashwagandha is a woody shrub and has a distinctive aroma. It is typically found in warmer climates in India and Middle East. In Sanskrit, ashwagandha means “smell of the horse” due to its distinctive smell.

It is meant to be taken over a long period of time, so don’t expect to see any results the day after sipping your “super herb”

How does Ashwagandha work:

This herb is known for its powerful health benefits, especially when it comes to reducing stress levels. There are various studies that have claimed the potential health benefits of this ancient herb but none of these studies are conclusive.

Studies have shown that it boosts mood, it helps in reducing the cortisol levels i.e. stress hormone in persons suffering from chronic stress. One of the study published in the journal Phytomedicine, suggested that ashwagandha can be as effective as the drug lorazepam which is an anxiety reducing drug.

One can incorporate Ashwagandha into their diet by sprinkling the powder form into cocoa, oatmeal, or even dessert. One can have a teaspoon of ashwagandha powder with a glass of water, which could have mood boosting benefits as well as cod manage thyroid disorders by balancing thyroid hormome.

Adaptogens are generally considered to be safe, but before incorporating it into your diet, you should always check with the doctor, as some adaptogens can interact negatively with certain medications and conditions.
