Heart burn is a burning pain in your chest caused by acid regurgitation into your esophagus and throat. Eating too much food or even obesity can increase pressure on your abdomen pushing the partially digested liquids or foods of your stomach up into esophagus. Most people are able to manage the discomfort with the over-the-counter medications and don’t suffer from any serious health issues. Here are some foods that makes heartburn worse.

1. Coffee

Studies have shown that caffeine relaxes the lower esophageal sphincter, which in turn lets the content of the stomach as well as acid from the stomach to go back into the esophagus and leading to heartburn. 2. Spicy Foods

Spicy foods like jalapenos or chilli peppers can trigger acid reflux and heart burn. Make sure you do not lie down after having a spicy meal because it can cause the acid reflux. Try staying upright for about three hours after eating so that your body keeps the food in your stomach instead of sending it back to esophagus.

 

3. Chocolate

Chocolate instigates the release of serotonin, a feel good neurotransmitter, from the cells in the intestine. This causes the esophageal sphincter to let the acid from the stomach to flow back up to the esophagus and resulting in heart burn. So, if you have any symptoms of heartburn, stay away from chocolates.

 

4. Fast Foods

Fast foods especially pizza could be one of the worst food that could result in heartburn. Tomato sauce in pizza are highly acid in nature, cheese is high in fat which slows down the emptying process in the stomach and enhances heartburn. Pizza contents like sausages,, garlic, pepperoni and onions can really cause a heartburn.

 

5.  Lemons and Oranges

It might have come as a surprise to few that fruits like lemons and oranges can cause heartburn. These citrus fruits contain some amount of citric acid, which isn’t properly handled by the esophagus, resulting in some room for the citric acid to be held in esophagus and causing acid reflux and heartburn.

 

6. Mint

Mint has been used in treating various stomach ailments due to its relaxing and soothing properties. However, mint can also relaxes the Lower esophageal sphincter muscles , causing the digestive fluids to flush back into the esophagus can causing heartburn. People already  suffering from heartburn shouldn’t take mint as it can worsen its symptoms.

 

7. Whole Milk
