Sichuan pepper, or Szechuan pepper or Chinese coriander, is commonly used in various Chinese recipes as a spice. Even though it is named pepper, it is not a real pepper at all. It is a berry grown on a plant named Chinese prickly ash. It contains antioxidants, minerals and nutrients that are required by our body for its proper functioning. Some of them are potassium, Vitamin A, Manganese, Zinc, Copper, Iron, carotene etc. Here are few Sichuan pepper health benefits.

Szechuan pepper

Enhance Blood Flow

When there is lack of iron in our body, it could result in various health issues such as dizziness, lack of appetite, fatigue etc. One of the most widespread health issues is anemia, which is popularly called as lacking of iron. Due to high levels of iron in Sichuan pepper, it has been found effective in enhancing circulatory blood flow and hemoglobin supply throughout our body.

Enhance our Immunity

Sichuan pepper contains rich levels of Zinc, which is beneficial for our immune system. Zinc keeps our immune system strong by enhancing the efficiency of white blood cells. These cells simply can’t function without zinc.  Besides zinc, these peppers are also rich in antioxidants and other compounds that have antiviral and anti-fungal properties.

Natural Analgesic

Sichuan pepper contains certain compounds that can act as analgesic. These compounds in pepper have been found to lower the pain by enveloping pain receptors, and hence reducing the pain. It is an effective natural remedy. It can be applied topically as well.

Strengthen Bones

This pepper contains various beneficial minerals, which are important for the growth and repair of bones and reducing the risk of age-related health issues such as osteoporosis. These minerals include copper, iron, manganese and phosphorus. It is beneficial to add vitamins and minerals into our diet as we age because our bone’s mineral strength keeps lowering with age.

Alleviates stomach ailments

Sichuan pepper helps in reducing cramping, bloating and even constipation. It also lowers inflammation in the intestinal track and enhances digestion.

Reduces Blood pressure

Rich levels of Potassium in Sichuan pepper relaxes the blood vessels and loosens up the arteries, and thus reduces high blood pressure. It also reduces the subsequent causes of high blood cholesterol and prevent the risk of cardiovascular diseases such as atherosclerosis, strokes etc.

Reduces Inflammation

Sichuan pepper, being rich in antioxidants, has anti-inflammatory effect. Inflammation that is caused from oxidative stress, can be reduced. Antioxidants negate the free radicals that cause oxidative stress and hinder inflammation. It is an effective natural remedy for reducing inflammation caused in arthritis and osteoarthritis.

Note: Large intake of this spice is not recommended. It should be taken in a very small amount in the form of a spice.
