Rheumatoid Arthritis

Two most common type of Arthritis (inflammation of joint) are Osteoarthritis (OA), which affect weight bearing joint including knee, spine, hip and Rheumatoid arthritis (RA), in which hands and wrists joints are most affected. There are many misconceptions associated with arthritis which creates doubts and fears among patient and the patient’s family. Here are the common myths surrounding arthritis.

 

Myth 1: Knuckle Joint cracking causes Arthritis

The cracking sound in knuckle joint is due to pressure changes in the lubricant i.e. synovial fluid of your joints which has no damaging effect on your joints. This change in pressure causes collapse of gas bubbles in the fluid resulting in cracking sound. Studies have shown that knuckle joint cracking doesn’t increase your risk of developing arthritis.

 

Myth 2: People with Arthritis Shouldn’t Exercise

For many years, it was believed that arthritis would damage the joints and that exercise would worsen the pain. But now exercise has become an important and significant factor in reducing and eliminating arthritis pain.

There are several therapeutic exercises that can be carried out by patients in their early stages of arthritis or even after surgery, so as to help increase the flexibility and improving the strength.

 

Myth 3: Arthritis is an inevitable part of getting older

Though arthritis is more likely to occur in older people but studies have shown that people of working age could also suffer from arthritis. Early treatment can delay the symptoms, or stop your arthritis from getting any worse.

 

Myth 4: X-Ray can tell all about Arthritis

X-ray can be an unreliable measure for detecting arthritis symptoms. The most effective way to diagnose arthritis is based on your symptoms like pain, stiffness, weakness and other tests including blood test for Rheumatoid arthritis or gout, test for uric acid levels in the fluid  of your joint.

 

Myth 5: Pre-operative or post-operative exercise makes people with arthritis experience more pain

Arthritis exercises helps in reducing inflammation, minimizing pain and improving your flexibility and ability to function. Therapeutic exercises also keep the muscles that surround your joint strong and reduce joint pain. Functional exercise makes the body supply the much needed lubrication to your stiff joints and to the operated knee joints .

 

Myth 6: Warm and dry climate is better for Arthritis

Medical research has shown that warm and dry climate may temporarily improve symptoms of arthritis but in the long run, these symptoms (swelling, pain, stiffness) tend to come back.
