Chronic stress can cause severe damage to your brain and can affect your mental, physiological and physical health. Eliminating events or things that could act as a stressor can help the neural stem cells to regain their capacity to generate neurons at a normal level, which could, in turn, enhance your brain’s ability to recover from stress.

According to the study conducted at Yale University, events that cause severe anxiety and stress can reduce the gray matter in parts of the medial per-frontal cortex, which is responsible for self control and emotion. Accumulation of stressful events can be challenging for individuals to lead a stress free life in future.

 

  Increases Risk of Stroke

High levels of stress can increase the risk of stroke. According to the study published in Stroke, people who experience chronic stress caused by problems such as health, money and relationships are likely to suffer with a stroke or transient ischemic attack. Other traditional factors such as cholesterol levels, blood pressure, smoking etc. are also responsible for getting a stroke when they are followed with chronic stress. Being under chronic stress inhibits the formation or birth of new neurons in the hippocampus, which could decrease the ability to rebound from stressful episodes and resulting in depression-like symptoms.

According to the study published in Nature, “Stress can cause depression or those stressful conditions that can precipitate depression.”

 

  Affect Cognitive Function- Like Changes in Learning and Memory

When one is under chronic stress,  stem cells in the hippocampus part of our brain , which is responsible for learning and memory, gets affected as result of which excess myelin is produced, perturbing the balance of communication and timing within the brain’s circuit. It also alters the neurons connection with each other.

According to the research conducted in University of California “substantial alterations in myelination can result in various neurological conditions and can even contribute to mental disorders like anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder”.

  • Is to have a good sleep. Sleep controls the level of stress hormones and negates the impacts of sleep deprivation on the brain. Follow a consistent sleep schedule throughout the week.
